The special thing about raku firing is that the works are heated to around 1000° C in a short time and then taken out of the kiln using tongs. The cracks in the glaze layer typical to the raku technique are caused by the enormous thermal shock. Gerald Pfaffl and Alexander Eselböck demonstrate the technique of raku firing in the university courtyard. You can also play (and eat) here—both the food and playing figures are designed and formed by the students.
