Teresa Feodorowna Ries (1866–1956) was a renowned Jewish sculptor who achieved considerable fame in Vienna and beyond. She challenged the prevailing belief that women were not suited for sculpture and even convinced the art critic Ludwig Hevesi, who had initially remarked: “It is a pity that she suffers from the delusion that she can do a man's work, for which she was not born.” After her death in exile, Ries was forgotten for decades, her legacy veiled by the passage of time. Only recently has her role in Viennese modernism begun to receive attention — yet the full extent of her impact remains largely unrecognized. This exhibition aims to unveil and highlight Ries’ sculptures, which continue to shape Vienna’s public spaces today, as well as her artistic significance and her reception in the Viennese print media. As part of the exhibition, talks with curator Anna Košková and art historian Dr. Elana Shapira will take place on June 26 at 4:00 PM and June 28 at 2:00 p.m.
