What is the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on emotions, cognition and exploitation? The exhibition The Unexpected explores the evolving relationship between human cognition and AI, critically reflecting on its ethical, and societal ramifications. As the culmination of the same-named artistic research project, the exhibition features works by Pamela Breda, Patrícia J. Reis, and Ruth Schnell. Breda’s film examines AI’s ontological shifts, drawing on posthuman philosophers such as Rosi Braidotti, Cary Wolfe and Benjamin Bratton. Reis and Schnell present an interactive mixed-reality installation using the head-mounted display HoloLens, referencing AI’s role in controversial areas such as autonomous weapons, brain hacking, and sexbots. Their work extends into the exhibition space through artifacts made from AI-related materials, creating a speculative narrative that blurs the line between virtual and tangible realities, inviting critical engagement with AI’s dual role as both a marvel and a challenge to humanity.

Artists: Pamela Breda, Patrícia J. Reis, Ruth Schnell. The exhibition is part of the research project The Unexpected (FWF Peek Project AR 650)
