The city is our largest artifact on this planet. It is the originator of all kinds of new buildings: from the theater to the Pencil Tower. How did the city give rise to their existence? This question typically has been answered in the discourse of architecture by looking either to social economic forces or a priori archetypes This book attempts to reverse that convention, arguing for the inner qualities of the city itself as that through which all its forms and functions come into existence.
